People choose to scuba dive for a variety of reasons. Why are you interested?
- Planning that vacation of the lifetime to some island in the Caribbean or Pacific - Perhaps you are just interested in a little adventure - Perhaps you just want to give scuba diving a try Whatever your reasons for learning to dive you have come to the right place and we intend to make your experience one of a lifetime. Shea Scuba believes that the quality of your instruction and training is critical for a lifetime of fun and safe diving. Beware of dive shops or instructors that offer free training if you purchase certain equipment specifically from them. Shea Scuba emphasizes training and instruction rather than free equipment. Good quality training and instruction lasts forever, unlike equipment that needs replaced periodically. Some of your first questions may be the following: What is scuba diving? How much time is involved in learning to dive? What do I receive when I complete this course? Do I need to purchase equipment? How much will this cost and when do I pay? What is the class schedule? What will I learn from taking a course from Shea Scuba? Where will I be able to dive after certification? What is scuba diving? SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Do you know what covers 80% of the Earth? WATER! Exploring this underwater world can take place in the warm clear water of the ocean in the Caribbean or right here in Pa. The marine life you see will be unlike anything you see on land. Scuba diving requires several pieces of equipment, which allows you to breathe, swim, and be comfortable underwater. You can certainly rent dive equipment at dive resorts and dive shops throughout the world. However, if you plan to dive more than a few times a year, we recommended you purchase your own equipment. This will be your option and you can base this decision on frequency of your diving and your comfort level renting this gear. How much time is involved in learning to dive? There are 3 phases of the PADI Open Water Diver course: - Classroom sessions: Home study is a large part of this course. Reading assignments are given and you can complete this in your home. You can estimate 6 to 8 hours of home studying. To assess your comprehension of the material, your instructor will meet with you a few times, and use a combination of videos, review questions, and quizzes to assess your comprehension of the material. - Pool Sessions: Pool sessions get you in the pool with your scuba gear to have some fun. You will grow comfortable with your gear and your new surroundings underwater. A series of pool sessions are required to get you comfortable with your gear. Expect 6 to 8 hours of pool sessions. - Open water training dives: Training dives consist of 4 dives spread over 2 day. Each of these dives must be at least 20 minutes in duration. We have a choice of several sites to complete these dive. Choice of sites will depend on weather, time of year and your comfort. What do I receive when I complete this course? After completion of this Open Water course, you will receive a PADI Open Water certification. This certification is valid everywhere in the world. PADI is the most widely know scuba diving certifying agency. PADI stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors Do I need to purchase equipment? It is recommended that you purchase a mask, snorkel, fins, and possibly wetsuit boots. If you do not own these items, they are available for purchase at Shea Scuba if needed. How much will this cost? The cost for Open Water Certification is $325 per person. What is the class schedule? We schedule classes with you. We will work with you to develop a schedule that meets your needs. What will I learn from taking a course from Shea Scuba? You will certainly learn all the requirements or standards set forth by the certifying agency. Shea Scuba will also impress upon you that as a scuba diver you are to avoid the rush to go deeper, go further, or go faster without proper planning, or diving above your personal comfort level. We will impress upon you to dive within your comfort level and end the dive when you see fit. Where will I be able to dive after certification? Resorts across the world will honor your Open Water Diver certification card along with your logbook. You may not be aware but there are many local diving sites within the central Pa area.
